PRE-PROFESSIONAL STUDENTS

Support for Pre-Professional Students

Professional students—whether in law, medical, dental, or other graduate programs—face immense pressure to succeed. The demands of rigorous academic programs, competition, long study hours, and the stress of future career expectations can often lead to burnout, anxiety, depression, and even substance use. For students pursuing highly regulated professions, these issues can quickly escalate, jeopardizing not only their academic standing but also their future licensure and career.

Professional students are held to high standards of conduct by both their schools and future licensing boards. Issues like substance abuse, mental health crises, or behavioral problems can lead to academic probation, disciplinary action, or loss of licensure eligibility. Early intervention helps students get back on track, ensuring that they can continue their education and career path without major setbacks.

Who We Help

  • Lawyers: Competition, long hours, perfectionism, and high stress can wear down even the most competent lawyer, often leading to depression, anxiety, interpersonal problems, gambling issues, substance abuse, and other problems. Chemical dependency is a prevalent problem in the legal profession and lawyers don’t have to struggle alone. National surveys show rates of depression and alcoholism among members of the legal profession are more than twice the rate of the public population.

  • Judges: Like all members of the legal profession, judges sometimes face problems – stress, depression, balancing work and family, alcohol or drug abuse, and compulsive behaviors. But a judge’s problem is more likely to go unnoticed and untreated because of the very nature of the judge’s role in the legal system.

  • Employers: Firm managers (or supervising partners) are likely to become aware of an attorney whose work performance is impaired because of problems related to chemical dependency, either sooner, through direct observation of certain patterns of conduct, or the reports from other personnel or clients of these patterns; or later, through evidence of significantly diminished performance, malpractice claims or other instances of substantial harm. Clearly, a firm has a vested interest in identifying impaired colleagues as soon as possible before substantial harm has occurred.

  • Family Members: Watching a loved one struggle with addiction or mental health issues is incredibly painful and can leave families feeling lost, overwhelmed, or unsure of how to help. Our services are tailored to guide families through the intervention process with compassion and care. We work closely with you to address the complex emotions involved and create a plan that encourages your loved one to seek help in a way that feels supportive, rather than confrontational. Whether it’s a parent, sibling, spouse, or extended family member, we provide you with the tools and resources to navigate these difficult times and rebuild healthy relationships.Family members can learn new tools to break the cycle of family dysfunction and restore their own emotional health.
